High in Hainan's central mountains, the Li people have been weaving cotton and hemp into patterned cloth for about 3,000 years — long before cotton reached the rest of China.
The craft
Li brocade (黎锦) is woven on a simple backstrap loom. Its geometric patterns encode clan identity, nature and myth: frogs for fertility, rivers, mountains, the sun. Each village has its own dialect of patterns.
Why it matters
In 2009 the tradition joined UNESCO's intangible heritage list as in urgent need of safeguarding. A handful of elder weavers still produce cloth the old way; younger artisans are now reviving it in cooperatives.
Where to see it
Visit living Li villages around Wuzhishan and Baoting, or the Hainan Provincial Museum in Haikou, which holds one of the best brocade collections on the island.
