Wuzhishan Travel Guide: Into Hainan’s Rainforest Heart

Introduction: Where the Mountain Meets the Table

We first heard about Wuzhishan from a taxi driver in Sanya who laughed when we said we wanted to “see the real Hainan.” “Go up,” he said, pointing north. “The mountain will feed you.” He wasn’t wrong. Wuzhishan—literally “Five Finger Mountain”—is the ecological core of the island, a rainforest city tucked beneath Hainan’s highest peak. But what surprised us wasn’t just the misty ridges or the sound of cicadas at dusk. It was the food. Every meal felt like the forest had been invited to the table. This guide is built from our own days there: the hikes, the bites, the small discoveries that no brochure prepared us for.

Body: Walking the Rainforest, Tasting the Mountain

Our first morning, we drove to the national park trailhead before the heat arrived. The path climbs through dense tropical rainforest—think giant banyan roots, ferns taller than us, and the constant drip of dew. We measured the air with our lungs: thick, green, almost sweet. The summit is a serious climb (allow 4–6 hours round trip), but you don’t need to reach the top to feel the point. About a third of the way up, there’s a clearing where the canopy opens and you can see the five “fingers” of the mountain range stretching south. We sat there longer than planned, watching clouds slide through the valleys. Locals told us the best months are November through March—cool, dry, and less slippery underfoot. We’d agree, but even in the wet season, the rainforest has its own drama.

Body: The Li and Miao Table—Five-Finger Pig and Wild Greens

Back in town, we learned that Wuzhishan is also a heartland of the Li and Miao ethnic groups, and their cooking is the real reason to linger. The star is *wujiao zhu*—literally “five-legged pig”—a small black breed that roams the hillsides. (We never counted a fifth leg, but the name comes from the way they walk, nose almost touching the ground, like an extra limb
